Archaeological sites
Crete, crossroad of continents and birthplace of the Western civilization! Until present days, the Minoan civilization, which have flourished from 2600 to 1000 b.C., is a sign of mentioning for the research and understanding of the historical evolution of Europe and the adjacent cultures that prospered around Mediterranean sea. In the wider area of Paleohora, you can visit archeological sites that are evident of our cultural inheritance and the roots of this land through the centuries! Many treasures from the ancient cities of the area that are dated mostly from the Hellinistic period (starting from 400 b.c.), are exposed on the Archeological museum of Hania city. Lissos: Independent city that flourished from the 4th century b.c., until the 9th a.c. Seaport of Irtakina and Eliros and a big trade centre with its own gold coin. In the area of Lissos, mosaics from the hydrotherapy room and the necropolis of the city, are preserved in an immaculate condition as well as a small theatre, baths e.t.c. Eliros: The most important Doric city of western Crete. Independent trade-shipping centre, that owned a gold coin and cities like Pikilassos, Syia, Lissos. Prospered from the 4th to 5th century b.c. and finally destroyed from the Saracens in 823 a.c.
Kadros – Kandania: Another area that flourished during the Hellinistic years. At Kadros, ruins from the past, such as the rock sculptured graves, testify the existance of an extensive city. Such tombs, in the same area, were found in the ancient city Kandania. Old mines are saved as well there and many ancient worship objects were found. Also, later old Christian monuments with mosaics. Irtakina: Ancient city above the village of Platanes, with indications of postMinoan civilization. For sailing trade, Irtakina was using the ports of Lissos and Syia. Syia: Seaport of Eliros and Irtakina, flourished during the Roman period. Until nowdays, you can see walls, water-reservoirs, roman baths e.t.c. at the village of Sougia. Pikilassos: Seaport of Eliros during the Hellinistic period. There was a temple of the Babylonian God Sarapis. Tarras: Agia Roumeli in present days. According to mythology, nymphe Akakalida gave birth to Filakidis and Filandros, descedants of God Apollon and founders of Eliros city. Vienna: Ancient city on the west area of Kundura. Old marblecolumns are saved on the coast and into the small gulf. Archeological treasures and historiographs’ thoughts, place the ancient city of Kalamidi at the area of Paleohora. Also, the ancient city Pelkis, at the present place of Pelekanos and the ancient Doulopolis at the place where village Sklavopoula is located nowdays.
